Easter Musings...

Jake and I decided to invite our family-less family members to have Easter dinner with us (that would be those who can't go to our parents' homes for the festivities). We love having so many siblings live so close to us! Kori and I braved a flourless chocolate cake and Derek attempted carving our bone-laden ham (and I think he may have succeeded, but we're not sure since none of us actually know how it is supposed to look when you're finished). We had every Hayden sans-Britton's family and Mom and Dad plus Austin's friend, Tyler. Aubrey braved the craziness of Hayden gatherings as the lone Frandsen attendee as everyone else is in Mexico for Spring Break...

I'm going to pause for a brief interlude musing. Today we had a house filled to the brim with love and laughter and teasing and wrestling and loud talking and eating and game-playing and oddity. Last week we had a house filled even more full for General Conference. The weekend before that we had a house even more full (literally bursting at the seams!) for Grant's baby blessing. It sure can be a lot of work, but I absolutely love it!

Back to my original musings. We watched "To This End Was I Born," which really set the mood for our Easter celebration. We all ate way too much, so I took on the role of Mommy for the whole crowd and suggested we take a walk in the evening sunshine. The real reason I suggested it, however, was because I have discovered a constant burning desire as of late to get out of the house as much as I possibly can. The rain and snow is going to drive me crazy soon! I strapped Grant into his stroller and grabbed the frisbee, and we were off to the nearby grassy knoll. Derek threw me the frisbee, and I froze momentarily, a thunderous memory filling my mind:

[Musing #3] About 3 years ago (or was it 4?) all the Idaho Hayden cousins of dateable age decided to set each other up on dates. Who was it that chose frisbee golf? Well, we were on an early hole, and I was somehow managing to stay near the pack. Until I decided to try to break free, that is, and break free I did. I took a huge running leap and hurled the frisbee as hard as I could into the abyss in the foreground, exultant at my genius and impending success. That lasted for...oh, about 2 seconds, when my frisbee hit the tree less than 10 feet in front of me. Sigh. I broke free by losing the game by a mile.

[returning to original musing] So here I was, fear attempting to override my excitement of being outside and enjoying the crisp evening air. I couldn't let that happen! So I took that frisbee, and I sent it sailing toward Austin. It caught an upward draft. It was beautiful! Floating, soaring, flying straight into Logan's head. WHAT?!!! Why on earth did he walk right into my direct line to Austin? Not only did he break the perfect throw (well, what would be considered a brilliant throw to someone like me...), his head was so hard it split my frisbee right in half! And we hadn't even been there for 5 minutes! Sigh. He just stood in stunned silence, trying to make sense of what just happened. You just broke my frisbee, that's what happened! Oh, well. It wasn't mine, anyway. I have no idea where we got it. Ironically, it was a HealthPlus "Your community's guardian angel since 1984" advertising frisbee. If you look closely in our reenactment photo, you will see a red spot at the top right of Logan's head where the damage was done. So much for attempting to overcome my fears. Someone mentioned that it was probably a sign from Heaven that we were breaking the Sabbath.

My final musing of the night is on a more serious note. Easter is one of my favorite holidays, and here are two reasons why. President Gordon B. Hinckley reminded us on several occasions that "if it were not for Easter, there would be no Christmas." It was Gethsemane, Calvary, and the Garden Tomb that made Him our Savior. Second, while touring the holy land, Elder Adam S. Bennion had a guide who said, "There are tombs of great men to be found all over the earth, but this one is different. This one is empty." This is what Easter is all about.
