Rockin' and Rollin'

Grant is rolling over pretty consistently now, which is good since he has been a late bloomer on his stomach. I guess this is his way of telling us that he doesn't have to do tummy time if he doesn't want to. He's also getting quite good at sitting up--it came out of nowhere, but suddenly he could stay up for 15 seconds on his own. He's still growing taller, but seems to be getting a little less chubby--maybe that's helping!

Here's the rest of the update on our lives. The info is on the pages, so you can read about it there...It feels a little weird to be upgrading into the "late twenties" during the next twelve months of my life. I'm not a huge fan of odd years, but other than that, 27 seems fine to me.
So here's a question: has anyone ever heard of a baby being scared of people who look different? I truly left their house feeling like I had a bit of a racist baby; even though I know the poor girl from Honduras didn't feel offended, I still felt a little embarrassed. I thought babies and children were supposed to not notice differences like adults...

Grant absolutely loves his sunglasses.

Before we moved to AZ any time my kids would see a person of color they would get very quiet and just stare and stare. I had the same thoughts as you...I didn't think they would discriminate between different races, but they can totally tell something is different. The staring was better than what happened the older they got...then little comments and questions would be loudly asked AS they stared. Just wait! Ha ha! Cute pages as always! I was so glad to see all three of you!!! I'm just sorry I was so scattered and didn't have more time to relax and chat with you.

You know, when Keith was little, he went to EVERYONE without a problem. So, when he freaked out seeing certain people, it was rare, and rather than thinking it was something about their appearance, we thought it was something about their character. I wish I could remember who he freaked out with. Whomever it was, we took him back and I don't think we ever talked to them or anything so we just don't recall who it was. Anyway, he's looking absolutely adorable! One of these days, we're going to get you guys to come play at our place for a while.

Babies do see the differences between the "norm" and other races, but they also pick up heavily on cues of people around them. Not necessarily that the people around them are racist, but that babies pick up on the cues that these people are different. Whether you are enunciating to make sure people who speak another language understand you, simple body cues that you express because they are people you don't know...babies are actually more observant than adults about differences and nuances.

*edit: should be THEIR "norm" not the norm....
